Rarely concealed by clothing, hair is one of the first characteristics that other people notice about us. Our hair speaks of our social, professional, cultural, and/or religious affiliations, and is an important element of our self-expression. Hair loss occurs due to many causes, but the culprit in 95% cases is affinity of the hair follicle for di hydro testosterone, a product of THE male hormone. This type of balding is called Male Pattern Baldness and is categorized on the basis of severity. Some females who have large quantities of this hormone also lose hair for the same reason. Other causes are accidental loss of the scalp, burns, fungal infections, excessive pulling, dietary deficiency of Vitamin B, Zinc, magnesium, biotin, Omega 3 fatty acids etc. Even very bald men have a fringe of hair on the back of the head, that, for genetic reasons are resistant to balding. This hair is carefully harvested under Local Anesthesia and divided into individual follicular units (consisting of 1-6 hair, average 1.7 hairs) under loupes. Each unit is literally “planted” onto the front in a staggered and random fashion to make a new hairline that is imperceptible. The procedure takes 6-8 hours for a team of doctors and technicians to do and is done under local anesthesia - that means the person is awake and comfortable. The results of surgery are typically excellent and the transplanted hair is permanent. Stem Cell Therapy has revolutionised hair growth and though the therapy is relatively new, the results are amazing! It involves injections of the patients own cells packed with growth factors that chemically attract stem cells. Hair Cloning in the future will further revolutionize this procedure, as preliminary studies show that hair transplants need not be immunologically matched, which also means that one may be able to have designer straight or wavy, blonde or black hair after transplantation.
Liposuction or body sculpting removes excess fat in areas which do not slim down in response to diet modification and exercise. It is not a method of weight loss.Commonly done for the tummy, sides, arms and hips/ thighs, it can remove upto 4-5 litres of fat at a time. This may or may not require hospitalisation depending on the extent of surgery, age of the patient and other factors.
Sometimes the fat thus removed can be treated and re injected into the breasts, lips, nasolabial lines and wrinkles. The best part about this fat injection or Fat Autotransplant (best done for the lips) is that it lasts a long time and has no adverse reactions of any kind. It also does not FEEL artificial, as many breast implants do. A small volume of fat, 5 cc or so, can be extracted from the thighs for filling fine wrinkles on the face and to enhance the lips as a solo procedure that requires no hospitalisation.
Botox or Botulinum Toxin A is a neurotoxin that causes temporary paralysis of the tiny muscles that cause facial wrinkles. It is called the lunchtime procedure and is a non surgical quick method of preventing and removing facial wrinkles. Newer applications include pure enhancement such as eyebrow lift and prevention of excessive sweating. We use the best product made by Allergan, which ensures your safety. Anesthesia is a gel applied to your skin. Along with the application of ice, the patient is comfortable. Botox lasts for 4-8 months, and lasts longer as you keep getting it done. Contrary to common belief, Botox is useful for people in their late twenties to thirties- this is when that line just starts to be seen and can be made to go away most easily.
Based on a naturally occurring Carbohydrate in the body that can hold water up to 10 times its own volume called Hyaluronic Acid, Restylane is imported from Europe and is useful on its own (for lip augmentation) and along with Botox (when the wrinkle is deep or has
set in). Restylane typically lasts for 4-8 months and is a premium product. The latest is to initially get restylane done and then to undergo a Fat Autotransplant, which is described fully with Liposuction.
A boon to reverse fine lines, suntan and to treat troublesome acne, Chemical Peels are of many types. Glycolic Acid/ Salicylic Acid is best for superficial peeling and TCA for treating scars, and deeper lines. The procedure is painless and the feeling is akin to applying a toner or aftershave. Along with home based care, the results are astounding. The peel smoothens out skin, aids in controlling acne and uneven pigmentation, removes suntan, and over a period of time, increases the thickness of skin so that the face looks more youthful. The affordable cost is a big plus to the average Joe. This peel is so safe and gentle that it can be done anywhere on the body. TCA peels are stronger peels and are not always suitable for darker skins, especially those that tan or burn easily. However, where deep wrinkles or acne scars or deep pigmentation has occurred, there’s nothing like TCA. The flipside is that the skin takes 3 weeks to regenerate, and for a full face peel that necessitates staying at home. We use peels imported from the US, and are the best in the world.
